Nightsafe is encouraging people to give up their comfy bed for the night to help raise funds to support homeless young people.
On 30 May, the Blackburn-based charity will host their first Sleep In – inviting people to sleep anywhere except their own bed – what’s in in a tent in the garden, a sofa fortress in the lounge or even in the bath.
Every December, Nightsafe organise a Sleep Out which raises lots of money for the charity. During lockdown, the charity thought it would be fun to arrange a Sleep In instead.
Everyone who takes part in the fun event is being encouraged to make a donation to the charity at justgiving.com/campaign/night-safe – which will help to make us £100,000 funding shortfall as a result of the Coronavirus outbreak.
Nightsafe – which has three homes that provide shelter for vulnerable young people aged 16-24, a night shelter and a day shelter – is feeling the impact of the virus. All our major fundraising events have been cancelled with funding streams and grant applications deferred until next year.
Jan Larkin, CEO, said: “The young people are the heart of everything we do here at Nightsafe – but if we don’t raise £100,000 this year it may mean we are not able to continue to offer these services to those who need it most.”
At the moment, Platform 5 – the charity’s day centre – is open on a reduced basis to offer emergency support to street homeless young people. However, the night shelter remains closed for Health and Safety reasons and will only reopen as soon as restrictions allow.
