Alexa, 18, who has just finished high school, is half way through her 12-month placement volunteering for Blackburn-based homeless charity Nightsafe.
Young people at Nightsafe have been developing green fingers during the lockdown period – as the charity launches its ‘Here We Grow’ project.
Nightsafe is encouraging people to give up their comfy bed for the night to help raise funds to support homeless young people. On 30 May, the Blackburn-based charity will host their first Sleep In – inviting people to sleep anywhere except their own bed – what’s in in a tent in the garden, a sofa fortress in the lounge or even in the bath.
Michael decided to volunteer after watching the DIY SOS episode on television featuring Nightsafe’s new build Safe@Silas.
Sebastian Gussner, a 19-year-old high school leaver from Halle, Germany, volunteered at Nightsafe during his gap year. “I think that Nightsafe is a true blessing for the region of Blackburn and Darwen for so many young people trying to get on the right track again.”
Blackburn-based Nightsafe need to raise £100,000 in funding to make up the shortfall they face in 2020 as a result of the Coronavirus outbreak.
We put a shout of out for the residents of our Cornfield Cliffe housing project on a Darwen Facebook group and we had footballs delivered within the hour!
The Coronavirus outbreak has affected us hard – both in terms of donations and fundraising. However, we are lucky to have such a kind and caring community who have rallied round to help us during this time of need.
As a local charity which provides support to vulnerable young people who are likely to be in the ‘at risk’ groups from the Covid-19 coronavirus, our priority is to safeguard the health and wellbeing of young people in our local community and that of our staff and volunteers. As such, in line with official guidance, we are now moving to the next stage of our response plan.
Prestige Beds are helping those at Nightsafe sleep easier at night – by donating £10 from every Alma mattress sold to the charity.
