A Blackburn-based charity has thanked Barratt Homes for their £1,000 community fund donation, describing it as a “lifeline for young people”.
Established in 1990, Nightsafe provides young people aged 16-24 who are homeless or at risk of homelessness, the help they need, when they need it.
Jan Larkin, CEO of Nightsafe, said: “Nightsafe believes that every young person has a right to a roof over their head, to live in a safe environment and be treated with kindness, dignity and respect.
“Everything we do here at the charity is to benefit the young people we support – but our costs continue to rise. We don’t want to have to cut services for the young people of Blackburn and Darwen, and wider Lancashire, which is why donations like this make such a difference.”
As well as an emergency Night Shelter for those in crisis, Nightsafe has a Day Centre where young people can shower, get clean clothing, access advice and support, and a warm meal.
It also has five housing projects that house young people for up to two years, helping them learn vital life skills such as cooking and budgeting, as well as helping them into education and employment.
The money will be spend providing items required by the young people it supports.
Jan Larkin explains: “Some young people arrive at Nightsafe wearing only the clothes on their back. They have often fled abuse in all its forms – physical, mental and financial.
“To be able to buy basics such as new underwear, or toiletries, or a ‘starter pack’ of pots and pans when they’re ready to move on is vital – but it all costs money. These are luxuries many of us take for granted, but to these young people it’s a lifeline.”
Every year, Nightsafe provides 15,000 nights off the street for young people in need, with services ranging from emergency accommodation to longer-term housing and support. However, running the charity costs £1.3 million annually, making donations from businesses and the public crucial to continuing its work.
Without the help of our supporters, we wouldn’t be able to do what we do.
Thank you to all our #NightsafeHeroes.
