Mo's Story
Mo is a 17-year-old young person who travelled over 6,500 miles through five countries to flee conflict in their home country of Sudan. Mo travelled alone leaving their family behind and no family connections in the UK.
Mo arrived at Witton in September in a taxi from Dover with no more than two carrier bags of items; they were scared and bewildered due to the lack of speaking or understanding the English language and his past journey to get here.

With the support of staff and children’s services, Mo soon eased and embraced the support offered. They were registered to a GP, dentist and opticians immediately. They received help with booking of appointments and 1.1 support taking them for new glasses and their braces removed.

Since arriving, Mo has been enrolled at college and is currently attending an ESOL course. They have actively been involved in Nightsafe’s football team matches and attends Nightsafe’s Day Centre when not in college where they have built new friendships and been involved in cooking, baking and life skills workshops. Mo is active within Witton and regularly takes part in Lifewise Units building on their social skills and independent living skills covering many areas around cooking, budgeting, cleaning and more, also been involved in up-cycling project.
Moh has settled in and is progressing well at Witton. They are always respectful towards staff and other residents and are a well-liked young person.
Mo would be happier if they made contact with family or friends, Witton staff are continually supporting them with this. Mohammad will be 18 in July and staff at Witton will work with their Leaving Care PA at the possibility of looking at plans around appropriate move on accommodation with him if he wishes to do so
