Daniel's Story

Daniel came to Nightsafe as an emergency referral. He had suffered neglect in the family home and it was not safe for him to return there. We gave him a place to stay in our Night Shelter to keep him safe while we helped him to consider his next steps. After 39 nights, we were able to secure a long-term space for him in our Safe @ Silas project.

After a few weeks settling into new accommodation, Daniel began to display erratic behaviour and significant changes in his moods making it increasingly difficult for staff at Nightsafe to lone work with him. Daniel was involved with multi agencies, he had a social worker, Leaving Care personal advisor, ELCAS, New Directions, early intervention services, and the adoption services. However Daniel’s engagement with staff at Nightsafe was sporadic and his mental health had taken a decline, showing some signs of paranoia. This was a difficult time for Daniel which also impacted negatively on the other residents as he experienced paranoia about them too.

Daniel needed a therapeutic placement with 121 support and onsite services, but as no such placement was available, we arranged for additional staffing to help support his needs at Nightsafe.

Daniel was supported by staff and a multi agency team to find the right medication to manage his symptoms and find the right support plan to help him move forward. Daniel needed a therapeutic placement with 121 support and onsite services, but as no such placement was available, we arranged for additional staffing to help support his needs at Nightsafe. Daniel was also allocated an external support worker to attend appointments with him and support his independence and learning.

Daniel needs continuous mental health assessments. The aim is for Daniel to receive a diagnosis and prognosis. Daniel now has a team of mental health professionals who work closely with him. He has regular medication reviews. Daniel feels he is still not on the correct medication, but this is an ongoing process. Daniel has support in place and attends all of his appointments. Daniel usually engages well during appointments and understands these are for his own benefit.

Daniel has received the additional support well and appears to appreciate time away from additional support has allowed respite for Nightsafe staff and they have been able to focus more on the other young people in the home. In recent multiagency meetings, professionals have stated that Daniel appears to be the best they have ever known him to be in terms of his mental health and being stable.

The multi-disciplinary team will continue to work alongside Daniel. There are still some problems with Daniel’s mental health to overcome. But overall, he is more stable than he has been in the past. The additional support has helped Daniel, it has also contributed towards helping the other young people in the home and the staff team at Nightsafe.

We have seen a huge improvement in Daniel’s mental health, and we will continue to support the assessment of D’s mental health to ensure Daniel receives the right support and treatment. This will also help Daniel understand his behaviours.

Daniel has become more sociable, engages with other residents and enjoys spending group time with residents and staff on and off site. This is a huge milestone for Daniel in the time he has resided with us.
