Kris Connolly is putting his best foot forward – after pledging to run 100 miles in October to raise money for Nightsafe, a youth homeless charity.
After a long period without training, Kris, 30, the new Vice Captain of Typhoons RUFC, set himself the challenge to get himself ‘match fit’ and raise money for a worthy cause in the process.
Kris, from Cherry Tree in Blackburn, said: “I knew I’d set myself an ambitious challenge – so I decided to raise money for a local charity at the same time. I saw Nightsafe on DIY SOS last year and I know they need to raise £100,000 this year to ensure they can continue with their vital work supporting homeless young people.”
He is documenting his progress via running app Strava, covering an average of 5k each day. He admits it’s not always easy – but he knows it’s for a good cause.
“I’m aiming to run most days. I’ve run for 7 days in a row now and my legs are a little bit sore. On the days when I’m struggling, I just need to remind myself that my challenge is easy compared to the work they do.”
Kris, a contractor for BAE Systems, initially set himself a fundraising target of £150 – but he has already smashed this target just 7 days into his challenge. He has now increased it to £250.
“My friends and family think I’m bonkers. The support so far has been fantastic.”
Jan Larkin, Nightsafe CEO, said: What are your thoughts on this quote from you: “Running 100 miles in 31 days is quite some challenge, especially when the weather is turning colder. Kris is showing such amazing commitment and is a true inspiration for our young people. From all at Nightsafe we wish Kris lots of luck, keep sharing your miles and stay safe.”
